The New Prairie United School Corporation and the Confucius Institute of Valparaiso University were notified in August 2013, that they had been designated as a Confucius Classroom by Hanban, the education arm of the Chinese Government. This is the culmination of two years' work between NPUSC and CIVU. New Prairie is now one of six Confucius Classrooms in Indiana and less than one hundred in the United States. Confucius Classrooms are a national network of exemplary Chinese language programs and serve as model sites for developing the field of Chinese language and culture teaching in American schools.
It is our hope that this designation will continue to build the Chinese Program at the New Prairie and strengthen its partnership with the Confucius Institute of Valparaiso University.
NPUSC Confucius Classroom hosted a dedication ceremony on September 16, 2013 at New Prairie High School. Professors of the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University, state legislators, numerous NPUSC Admininstrators and Board Members attended. A performance which included Carnegie Arts, South Shore Orchestra, Troy Webdell (Conductor), South Shore Dane Alliance, Valparaiso University Dept. of Foreign Languages and Valparaiso University Dept. of International Studies was presented.
